Not doing the “W” word.

When I was young I left school and got a job as society taught me. Like most, I became dissatisfied with my income over time and wanted to improve it. I also became disillusioned with what I had been taught by others were my only options (see Undoing the mental conditioning.).

I was taught that in order to improve things I had to either working hard (and get the occasional raise), or go back to school to earn a higher level of education (and get a better paying job, normally with more responsibility and more work).

It seemed like a lot of work for little gain. I wanted something better. The problem was, I didn't know any better or know where I could find such knowledge.

After some time working, I noticed that of all the people above me the boss made the most money. There was only one thing for it. I had to become the boss. After trying a few jobs, I tried starting my first business.

My first business was a fantastic success, but not in the monetary sense (although it wasn’t a bad little business as my millionaire uncle agreed). It was successful in what it taught me.

You see although I made more money than my employees, I worked harder and had to stress of paying the bills and running the business. It was far from perfect.

After selling that business I came to a realization: The best business owner was one who didn’t even work in the company

So I tried again. This time from the very first day, I ran the business not focused on making money, but rather on creating something profitable which I could push myself out of and it would run by itself. I almost achieved this. If it wasn't for my business partner intent on doing the opposite.

There is a saying “work on your business not in it”, but few people really understand it. They think that working on the business means to do ‘managerial things’ making decisions and using your brain rather than your hands. My ex partner believed he had to bury himself deep within the business because he thought if he didn't have control, things would go wrong.

I wanted to make the money, but I didn’t want to work to do it. I knew the business may not run as well without me as if I was there, but it would run. Profitably too. If I could achieve this, then I could start another business doing the same thing in another location. If I could make two businesses like this, then why not 10? or 100?

I new amount you make is not so important as long as it is being made passively and not directly by your actions, then you are free to repeat it many times over. Or do something else with your time to bring in more money

Freeing up my time became more an more important. I decided I had let my desire to be free from work steer my money making efforts. I soon discovered there are plenty of ways to improve your income stream with little work.

This is where real wealth creation begins. After all, there are only 24 hours in the day, not matter who you are. You can’t manufacture more time. As soon as you get a job, you're limiting your income potential. That’s not good enough for me and nor should it be for you.

I’ve simply come to believe “work” is a 'dirty word', my wife and I refer to it as the “W” word (thanks to the cat from the British sci-fi comedy: Red Dwarf).

“We don't do the 'W' word” and nor should you have to
